Bayerische Motoren Werke AG or Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) was founded in 1929 and is still headquartered in Munich, Germany. Among the company's earliest products were world-famed motorcycles that set new speed records.
BMW also built the world's first jet airplane engines. However, the company is principally known as one of the world's greatest automakers, producing cars that combine power and elegance with world class German engineering and reliability. Generally, BMW motor cars were simple, even spartan in design. However, in the mid '50s, BMW unveiled a car that was described as "voluptuously beautiful" and a "fantasy made real". Designed by Count Albrecht Goertz, this classic two-seater convertible was distinguished by a rakish all-aluminium body mounted on a tubular steel chassis and a 3.2 liter V-8 engine that delivered exhilarating performance and generated brisk, wholesome pipe music from the exhaust. Other interesting design elements were a flared grille instead of the traditional kidney shape and a complete tool kit for minor repairs and adjustments. Only 252 of this car were made from 1956 through 1959.
Now a rare 1957 BMW 507 has been recaptured in a precision-engineered model produced - and available only from - Matchbox Collectibles, Inc.
